My concepts for the production of art are directly influenced and intertwined with the historical and contemporary means of production. This fascination started with my project to modify Irobot Company’s Roomba vacuum cleaners in order to bring out their ability to produce original paintings. In the past 5 years I have jumped from a 17th century Dutch ideology of the goddess Fortuna and her use of wind as a symbol, to the direct visual reference of 20th century implements of war. Everyone from the 13th century Germans, to the Wright Brothers have paid special homage to Fortuna’s foreboding presence. I am also heavily interested in mechanics, focusing on movement and it’s relationship to historical streamlined industrial design. Starting with these concepts, I have created a catalogue of large-scale interactive sculptures that interplay with the visceral aesthetic of children’s toys.
