The Spindle, the Shuttle, and the Needle at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum
On View May 12 - Aug 6, 2023
Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum
This installation harkens back to the childhood notion of ‘play’, evoking a sense of joy, wonder, and catharsis. Two dozen steel and paracord sculptures, ranging in size from six inches to seven feet, are the product of the past three years in studio, two artist residencies, and countless hours of research.
From the exhibition essay by Mikey Estes:
The Spindle, the Shuttle, and the Needle, a reference to Grimm’s eponymous fairy tale,
marks the artist’s first solo exhibition since 2014’s Tom Sawyer Wears A Business Suit. Where the
latter explored the relationship between a single form and architectural space, this exhibition
situates a group of recent works in formal and spatial conversation with one another: 18 of the
artist’s small weavings, 2 new figurative works, a pair of 7’ diameter wheels, and an enlarged
saddle. The works, which combine public art vernacular with a modernist approach to sculpture,
engage with traditional craft through contemporary means.
